An athame is a witch's personal magical knife. The blade is often dull and double-edged and the handle is black or some other dark color to absorb power. 

 The blade may be magnetic, and magical symbols are enscribed on the hilt. It is commonly linked with the element of Fire.

An athame is presented to a new witch on the evening of her initiation.

The athame is used in ritual to direct energy, such as for casting and releasing circles and to control summoned spirits.
